The first peony to bloom in my new garden was the Chocolate Soldier. Not what I was expecting, but beautiful. It was pink not a red, and very low to the ground. I was amazed with this unusual weather and having peonies so early. This was blooming before any of my tree peonies. The flower buds come out with the first leaves. You need to get close to the ground to smell the flower and the sent is not strong. A lovely flower to have in any collection or garden.

It came from a well known grower Adelman. I am told it might not look the same the first year. I will wait to see what it looks like this year.
